There are four new R’s we all need to practice - Reduce, Repair, Retrofit and Replace. Reduce the amount of water you use, Repair any leaks you may have, Retrofit your shower heads, and toilets and when it comes time to Replace an applicance make sure it is a high efficency energy saving model.

The following are just a few ways you can become the source of the solution to clean drinking water:
* Don’t flush expired medications away. The local Household Special Waste Facility and some pharmacies will take your old medications and dispose of them in a safe and secure manner.
* Change your bathing routine by switching from baths or showers. A bath uses more than 80 litres of water; a shower uses less than 38 litres every five minutes. If you just can’t give up relaxing in the tub, decrease the amount of water you would normally use by half.
* Shorten your shower time; 5 to 10 minutes is plenty. Also switching to a low flow showerhead and faucet will save as much as 50% of the water you use each time.
* Consider replacing your existing toilet with a new low-flush toilet to conserve water. New toilet tanks use about six litres of water, that’s approximately two-thirds less than old models. If you can’t buy a new toilet right now try filling a one-litre plastic pop bottle with water and placing it in your tank. This displaces some of the water normally used and reduces the amount required each time you flush.
* When brushing your teeth, don’t let the faucet run. By turning the tap off you could save up to 11 litres of water a minute.
* Replace washing machines or dishwashers with new water efficient appliances.
* When using cleaning supplies, don’t use anymore than you absolutely have to, or purchase newer “green” cleaners available in stores. Some greener cleaning choices are in your cupboard right now. Use vinegar and water for cleaning windows and glass or try baking soda and water to clean surfaces where you would normally use cleanser.
* Common household products can contain hazardous chemicals which if not disposed of properly could lead to contaminating our water. Always keep products in their original labeled containers and use them only for their intended purposes.
* Used printer and toner cartridges can be recycled at many retailers.
