On July 3, 2007 the Clean Water Act, 2006 and its regulations became law. It requires each of 19 designated Source Protection Regions or Areas to form Source Protection Committees to develop source protection plans by gathering local watershed information, assessing threats to protect its sources of municipal drinking water.
The Source Protection Committee comprised of representatives from municipalities, industry, business, environmental groups, the general public and First Nations will identify and assess risks to the quality and quantity of drinking water resources; develop a source protection plan to address risks; implement the source protection plan through planning and regulations; and to monitor and report on the ongoing effectiveness of the protective measures being taken.
