TEN YEAR MONITORING REPORT

Do you have an interest in the St. Marys River and protecting its natural, cultural and recreational values? Your help is being sought in compiling information for a ten year monitoring report. Designated as Canadian Heritage River in 2000, each Canadian Heritage River must be scrutinized periodically to determine its continuing eligibility in fulfilling the Canadian Heritage River System’s (CHRS) Integrity Guidelines.

The Canadian Heritage Rivers Systems was established by the Federal, Provincial and territorial governments to recognize the outstanding rivers of Canada and establish a framework for managing these rivers in such a way that their heritage values would be identified and celebrated for the long term benefit and enjoyment of all Canadians. In order to qualify as a Heritage River, a river (or section of it), must have outstanding significance at the national level in one or more areas of the natural, cultural or recreational environment and must meet high standards of integrity. If the nomination is accepted by the Canadian Heritage Rivers Board, a strategy for caring for the river must be lodged with the Board within three years, whereupon the river is formally designated a Canadian Heritage River.
